Forest House
North Coast, KwaZulu Natal, RSA
2018
Forest House is a contemplative retreat designed to sit quietly within its lush woodland setting, allowing architecture and landscape to merge into a single, harmonious experience. The home celebrates the honesty of raw materials — off-shutter concrete, slender steel columns and warm timber — each used with precision to create an elegant tension between weight and lightness. Subtle chamfers soften otherwise monolithic forms, revealing a refined craftsmanship that elevates the material palette beyond the expected.
Inside, the interiors embrace a calm, understated luxury. Natural light moves gently across textured surfaces, while a restrained tonal palette creates an atmosphere of depth and serenity. Bespoke joinery and finely executed details reinforce a sense of quiet sophistication, ensuring that the roughness of the exterior is counterbalanced by moments of warmth, intimacy and tactile richness.
The spatial arrangement encourages a slow, intentional experience of the home, with framed views and extended thresholds drawing the forest into each room. The architectural clarity is matched by furniture selections that prioritise simplicity, comfort and material integrity — pieces that feel grounded within the setting yet unmistakably refined.
Forest House stands as a study in balance: raw yet elegant, robust yet sensitive, minimal yet deeply atmospheric. Through its nuanced materiality and timeless interior architecture, it creates a sanctuary that is both architecturally expressive and profoundly connected to nature.
