Umhlanga House
Umhlanga, KwaZulu Natal, RSA
2021
Umhlanga House is a striking contemporary residence shaped by the passions and lifestyle of its discerning owners. Conceived for clients who value entertaining, fine food, wine, and the display of a cherished car collection, the home translates these personal interests into a bold architectural composition and a richly layered interior experience. Three distinct floor plates — a heavy subterranean base, an intermediate concrete level, and a lightweight steel-framed upper floor — are rotated to create dramatic cantilevers, sheltered terraces and sculptural outdoor rooms.
Inside, the design amplifies the expressive geometry of the structure, softening its strong architectural language with refined materials, crafted joinery and a sophisticated, modern palette. The kitchen and living spaces form the true heart of the home, designed for entertaining yet grounded in everyday comfort. Rich timbers, textured stone and matte black details bring depth and warmth, while generous glazing opens the interior to elevated coastal views.
The private suites balance intimacy with luxury, offering quieter atmospheres through tonal refinement and layered lighting. Throughout the home, custom furniture and bespoke detailing ensure cohesion and a sense of elevated craftsmanship.
Umhlanga House seamlessly merges architectural drama with interior restraint, creating a residence that feels both powerful and deeply personal. It is a home where structural boldness meets material elegance — a tailored, contemporary environment that celebrates lifestyle, experience and refined living.
